Welcoming Leaders, Celebrating Volunteers

September 5, 2025

At our recent Board of Directors retreat, the Emily Krzyzewski Center welcomed two new members to our Board and honored recipients of the Duke University Volunteer Service Award.

Joining our Board are Dr. Connie Gomez-Joines (Executive Director of the Center for the Global Learner at Durham Tech) and Max Perkins (Head of Insurance Solutions at Spektrum Labs).

“Adding leaders like Connie and Max to our Board strengthens the Center’s vision and reach,” said Dr. Valerie Anderson, Chief Executive Officer. “They bring invaluable experience and a commitment to our community. I look forward to working alongside them to advance our mission.”

We also honored outstanding volunteers whose service makes a meaningful difference at the Center and in the Durham community. The 2025 honorees are Jake Marrs (Duke University Graduate), Dr. Guido Ferrari (Duke Department of Surgery), Dr. Iwinosa Idahor (Office of Equity Affairs, Durham Public Schools), and Alan Schwartz (Guggenheim Partners).

Each has made a unique impact: Marrs as a dedicated Pioneer Scholars tutor; Ferrari as a mentor to Scholars to College students during Career Exploration Night and beyond; Idahor as a critical member of the Center’s programs committee; and Schwartz as a longtime donor and advocate for the Center’s work.

Reflecting on his service, Ferrari said, “The most rewarding aspect of volunteering at the Center has been the opportunity to listen to younger generations and gain insight into their visions and goals. Their energy and aspirations are always inspiring, and I feel the positive challenge to give my very best in support.”
