Steve Serck’s connection to the Emily K Center began long before the building itself existed. He first met Coach Mike Krzyzewski at the Michael Jordan Basketball Camp in 1998. As fellow Chicago natives, the two quickly formed a friendship that has lasted for decades.
“When Coach K began talking about building the Emily K Center, I knew it was something special,” Steve shared. “That’s when I made my first donation to help bring the Center to life.”
Through his company, J.A.B Produce, Steve supports the Center by sponsoring events and providing fruit for students to enjoy during programming.
Education has always been a cornerstone of Steve’s family. Two of his sons earned education degrees and went on to teach in the Chicago Public School system, reinforcing the belief that access to quality education can change lives.
What he admires most about the Emily K Center is the comprehensive support for students at every stage of their educational journey. From early childhood through college and into careers, the Center provides consistent academic, social, and emotional guidance.
“There’s nothing more powerful than hearing a student say they’re the first in their family to go to college,” he said. “Seeing kids start at the Center when they’re young and follow that path all the way through a degree and a career is incredibly meaningful.”
Over the years, Steve has made many visits to the Emily K Center, each one creating lasting memories. His favorite moments are seeing a student enjoy fresh fruit donated by his family.
“The Emily K Center is on stable ground, with strong support and deep community relationships,” says Steve. “My hope is that people continue to understand the importance of the Center’s work and help it grow, adapt, and expand its services to reach even more students.”
