Mother’s Day Ball Raises Over $530,000

May 24, 2024

The Emily K Center’s thirteenth annual Mother’s Day Ball was a smashing success, raising over $530,000 in support of the Center. More than 400 community members attended this celebratory evening at the Washington Duke Inn to eat, dance, donate, and learn more about the Center and our incredible students.

This year, the program focused on educator appreciation and highlighted a member of the inaugural Emily K Center Next Steps Teacher Fellowship – Cheri Fennell. Cheri spoke about her experience as a Durham Public Schools high school math teacher and what the Fellowship has meant to her.

“It’s been incredible being a part of the Emily K Center’s Next Step Teacher Fellowship and getting to work with a strong group of like-minded educators, focused on increasing postsecondary success…We all need to work together to create opportunities for students so that all high school graduates have the option to attend college or pursue a meaningful career.”

The program also featured Coach Mike Krzyzewski and two Emily K Center students – a fourth grader with the Pioneer Scholars program (Tre’Sean) and a high school senior with the Scholars to College program (Michelle). Michelle is a first generation Mexican-American student who will be pursuing a Biomedical Engineering degree at Harvard University in the fall of 2024 – the first Emily K Center student to enroll at Harvard!

We are grateful to Leland Little for leading our live auction and to all the donors and sponsors who helped us reach our fundraising goal. Thank you as well to our Advancement committee and Mother’s Day Ball Chair, Anne Lloyd, for planning this fantastic evening. We had a blast dancing the night away and spending time with so many incredible people. Thank you!
