Dr. Tonya Armstrong

February 2, 2026

Tonya’s relationship with the Emily K Center took shape in 2018, as a new social-emotional learning initiative was developing. Her organization, The Armstrong Center for Hope, was selected to support this meaningful investment in the wellness of Emily K Center students and families. Today, the Center’s social-emotional learning program is thriving, with students receiving weekly support from dedicated staff members who help them learn how to process emotions, handle stress, resolve conflict, and build essential life skills. Since 2024, Tonya has been proud to serve on the Center’s Board of Directors, continuing her commitment to the Center’s mission.

For Tonya, supporting educational opportunity is rooted in a belief in human potential. “Human beings from all walks of life carry great potential, yet often need support and nurturing to manifest that potential,” she shares. “The Emily K Center’s concrete resources continue to pivot students towards much greater opportunity in education as well as overall quality of life.”

What excites Tonya most about the Center is the people behind the mission. As a Durham native, the impact of the Center’s work in the local community holds particular significance. She points to the “superb team of staff and Board members working synergistically to make a true difference in the Durham community” as one of the Center’s greatest strengths.

Reflecting on favorite memories, Tonya highlights the Center’s leadership evolution. “Watching the Emily K Center grow from the incredibly impactful work of its previous CEO, Adam Eigenrauch, to its brilliant visionary, Dr. Valerie Anderson, in the current CEO role has been amazing!”

Looking ahead, Tonya hopes for the Emily K Center to continue transforming young people’s lives and, in doing so, help cultivate a new generation of leaders.

When asked to sum up what the Center means to her in a single sentence, Tonya answered: “Through its educational tools, the Center cultivates abundant opportunity for all who desire powerful change for their lives and communities.”
