20 Years of Impact, a Future of Possibility

Since opening our doors in 2006, the Emily K Center has remained committed to empowering Durham students to pursue their dreams. Named in honor of Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s mother, Emily, the Center carries forward her generous spirit and unwavering belief in the power of education. Over the years, the Center has expanded to support students from elementary school through college with academics, socio-emotional support, and career success. As we mark 20 years of impact, we celebrate a beautiful journey shaped by the more than 12,500 students and families we have served, and our incredible supporters who make this work possible. Thank you for being part of our story and for walking alongside us as we look toward a bright future of possibility.

Our Journey in Milestones

2003

The Center receives 501(c)(3) status and holds a ground-breaking ceremony.

2006

Doors open to the community, with our inaugural Pioneer Scholars program serving 38 students.

2008

Programming extended to high school, with the launch of Scholars to College.

2012

The Scholars on Campus program begins, supporting college students.

2016

The inaugural group of high school students earn their college degrees and Game Plan: College is established.

2018

Annual reach has grown to nearly 2,000 students, with an expanded focus on socio-emotional learning and family support.

2021

A 7,500-square-foot building expansion is completed.

2022

The Center initiates the Parent Advisory Council and debuts a new logo and tagline: "Where Students Thrive."

2025

Game Plan: College becomes Game Plan: Future and the Center serves a record-breaking 2,400+ students.
