Frederick Russell

February 23, 2026

Frederick participated in both the Scholars to College and Scholars on Campus programs, graduating from NC State University with a bachelor’s degree in Fisheries, Wildlife, & Conservation in 2023.

When asked about the best part of his time with the Center, Frederick shared “The meetings and advice that I received during college made me feel like there was still someone in my corner that I could turn to for support.” That continued connection made a difference. Even after transitioning to campus life, Frederick never felt like he was navigating it alone.

The Center also played a key role in building Frederick’s professional skills. “It definitely helped strengthen my professional capabilities and caused me to be more mindful of the things I need to do to be successful,” he said. From resume development to guidance on communication, the practical tools and mentorship he received prepared Frederick to pursue new opportunities with confidence.

Among Frederick’s favorite memories is Senior Incentive Night, an evening that perfectly captured the joy and community of the Emily K Center. Scholars celebrated with a trip to an arcade, brought games back to the Center, and stayed overnight. “I remember staying up really late just shooting around in the gym,” Frederick recalled. “I’m really grateful for that night.”

Beyond programs and events, what stands out most to him are the relationships he built.

“The Center is truly full of wonderful, caring people. I’ve always admired how welcoming the staff is,” he said. “The whole environment really makes you feel like they are invested in your success. This is one of the things that I appreciate the most about the Emily K Center.”

Outside of his professional pursuits, Frederick enjoys playing video games and basketball whenever he can. He also is currently learning Spanish and Japanese, embracing new challenges and opportunities to grow.

In December, Frederick graduated from NC State’s GIS Graduate Certificate program. He continues to live in Durham and is applying to jobs and M.S. programs related to wildlife conservation, research, and Geographic Information Systems.

As Frederick looks ahead, his journey reflects the power of sustained mentorship and a community that remains present long after graduation.
