Mother’s Day Ball Celebrates Students, Community, and 20 Years of Impact

More than 450 community members gathered at the Washington Duke Inn for the Emily K Center’s fifteenth annual Mother’s Day Ball, an evening filled with celebration, connection, and inspiring stories. This year’s event also marked the Emily K Center’s 20th anniversary and honored the students, families, staff, and supporters who have shaped our journey along the way.
Guests heard special remarks from keynote speaker, Duke Men’s Basketball Head Coach Jon Scheyer, and Emily K Center Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Valerie Anderson. Auctioneer Leland Little kept the crowd energized during an exciting live auction and fund-a-need.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, the Ball raised more than $675,000 to support the Emily K Center’s programs and students – our largest total yet!
One of the most memorable parts of the night came from our student speakers, who reminded everyone why this work matters. Micah, a fifth-grade student in our Pioneer Scholars program, brought joy and enthusiasm to the stage as he shared his love of learning and experience at the Center. Jacquie, a senior in our Scholars to College program, spoke about her academic journey, personal growth, and plans to attend Columbia University this fall as a QuestBridge Scholar. Their stories are powerful examples of what students can achieve when they are surrounded by encouragement, opportunity, and support.
We are grateful to our Advancement Committee, sponsors, volunteers, donors, and everyone who helped bring this event to life. Because of you, the Emily K Center can continue empowering students to dream big, pursue their goals, and build bright futures.
