Farewell from Adam & Welcome Valerie

June 5, 2025

The floorboards were being put down in the gymnasium and I wore a hard hat on the tour when I interviewed at the Emily K Center in 2006. With only a handful of weeks left for me now, my hard hat-wearing days are over and I instead feel a deep sense of gratitude. Because of you and others, the Center has grown into one of the oldest and largest nonprofits in Durham. Most importantly, we are proudly embedded within a broader community that wants to see all Durham students achieve economic and social mobility and reach their fullest potential individually.

I’m thankful for the talented and committed colleagues I’ve partnered with, the cohesive and well-governed Board that has led so intentionally, the countless volunteers who have contributed countless hours, and the community of donors and partner organizations who have made the work of the Center possible. Close to 2,200 students will participate in our four core programs this year.  Twenty years ago, we would never have envisioned as much.

During these challenging times in the social sector, the Center remains committed to doing the work that is demanded. Dr. Valerie Anderson will assume the CEO role on June 26th with the full confidence of our staff and Board team, and her expertise and leadership capabilities will serve the organization exceedingly well – just as they have for the last seven years. Handing off the awesome responsibility of leading the Center to Valerie is something I’m very proud of because I’m certain the organization will be well-led going forward. I know you join me in supporting her and championing the Center to its most meaningful work.
