The Emily K Center Celebrates Annual “May March”

Thursday, May 19th, at 5:30 p.m.

The May March at the Emily Krzyzewski Center is a celebration of a successful academic year and a commemoration of the Class of 2016’s graduating high school seniors.  In addition, this year, the Center will also recognize its first class of graduating college students

This year’s annual gathering will include a procession of approximately 220 students in the 1st through 12th grades, all of whom attend the Emily K Center’s K to College programs.  These programs develop educated student leaders who achieve in school, gain entry to and graduate from college, and ultimately break the cycle of poverty in their families.

Twenty-five seniors, the Center’s largest ever graduating class, will be dressed in a variety of cap and gown colors as they come together from high schools across Durham. Each senior will be presented with a sweatshirt from the college he or she will be enrolling in this fall.

In addition, nine awards will be presented to younger students to recognize exceptional achievement in the areas of Academics, Character, and Leadership.

The Center’s founder and inspiration, Mike Krzyzewski, will give the keynote address to an expected audience of 400+.

When: Students gather at 5:00 pm; procession begins at 5:30 p.m.

Where:  Ceremony will be held in the Emily K Center gymnasium (904 W. Chapel Hill St, Durham, NC 27701)

Additionally:  Newscaster/crew can film procession and leave immediately, prior to the 70 minute ceremony, or stay for full event.  Students, staff, and board members will be available for interviews.  Please contact Lauren Gardner at 919-680-0308 x1005 or to schedule specific interviews.

To date, the Emily K Center has graduated 47 students from high school and the Scholars to College program. At this year's May March, we will celebrate 25 more graduates, our fifth and largest class of seniors.

100% of our Scholars to College seniors have graduated high school on time and 100% enroll in college. Roughly 80% of those will be the first in their family to earn a college degree.

The twenty-five students in our Class of 2016 earned 120 acceptances to 52 colleges. They earned a total of $2,618,409 in scholarships and grants. While in high school they completed a combined total of 452 Honors, AP, IB, and dual-enrollment courses. Their average weighted GPA is 3.84 (unweighted is 3.3).

This year we’ll also celebrate our first class of college graduates, with five students earning their bachelor’s degrees.
