On May 4, 2013, a total of 365 guests gathered at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club for an evening of fine dining, dancing, and celebrating the Emily K Center at its third annual Mother’s Day Ball. Inspired by Duke Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s relationship with his mother, the Mother’s Day Ball honors the role of family and community in the development of today’s young people.
A success by all accounts, this year’s event raised more than $200,000 for the Center – an event record. For more coverage of the event, check out our blog post here, our photos on Facebook, or this video courtesy of WRAL.

The Emily K Center was established in 2006 and named in honor of Duke Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s mother. The Center’s K to College Model serves academically-focused students in out-of-school programming designed to help them achieve in school, gain entry to college, and break the cycle of poverty in their families. In addition, the Center serves thousands of students and community members monthly through the use of the Center’s multipurpose rooms, gymnasium, and performance stage.
Your support allows the Emily K Center to continue to offer its K to College Model programming free of charge to a growing number of students every year. In the spring of 2012, the Center was incredibly proud to have played an integral role in positioning each member of our first class of graduating seniors for acceptance into multiple colleges and universities. We are even more excited to report that all of these students are now studying on campuses across the east coast. Your support will allow even more students to follow in the footsteps of this inaugural class.
